Every inch of beach on Ocracoke Island is fair game for some fantastic shelling. Lucky shellers with a little patience and a good eye have found everything from sand dollars and Scotch Bonnets to seahorses, shark’s teeth, and conchs to rival any of those found in the Caribbean.

The best time to go is low tide in the morning, when you can walk further out and see what the high tide washed ashore overnight. Or make the short boat trip over to nearby, uninhabited Portsmouth Island for even more undisturbed beaches known for outstanding shelling.
