OPS Working Waterman’s Festival

October 19   •   8:00 am - 5:00 pm

Celebrate this Ocracoke Heritage Event with its rich history and continuing tradition of working on the water in Ocracoke. Since the first inhabitants of the island, Ocracokers have made their living on the water, the first being pilots who guided ships through the treacherous Ocracoke Inlet, to fishing, crabbing, clamming, oyster harvesting, duck hunting guides, fishing guides, decoy carvers, charter fishermen, beach fishing, fish houses, commercial fishing, all of which continue today, handed down through the generations.
The festival will celebrate these traditions with booths and exhibits with the watermen themselves., Porch talks throughout the day highlighting each tradition, a traditional Ocracoke Fish Fry, T-shirts, posters and a silent auction are just some of the activities planned.
