Ocracoke Safety Tips

WALKING
Never turn your back on traffic. Always face it. Walk on the left side of the road. Carry a light at night. It’s way darker than you think.

BIKING
Go with the flow—always ride your bike in the same direction as traffic, on the right side of the road. Wear a helmet for safety, and if you’re riding after dark, make sure your bike has reflectors and lights so you’re easy to spot.
SWIMMING
Caught in a rip current? Don’t panic. Relax and stay afloat. The current will pull you out to sea, but not underwater. Swim parallel to the beach until you can swim back to shore. If you need help, calmly wave your hands and shout.
CARTING
Drivers must be at least 16 years old—no exceptions. Please respect private property, and remember that carts are not permitted beyond South Point Road.
KEEPING DOGS SAFE
Dogs on the beach must be on a leash 6 ft. or shorter. Keep your dog leashed at all times. Bring plenty of fresh water for your pets. Dogs dehydrate fast on the beach. Don’t allow your dog to drink saltwater. Give good boys and girls ample shade from the sun, especially for long beach days. Plan walks for the cooler parts of the day to keep paws nice and cool. Keep your pet away from fish hooks. Removing fish hooks is not fun for our vets or your pet. Watch out for sand spurs. Those suckers are a pain in the paws. Fleas and ticks vacation here, too. Be sure to apply your pet’s medication before visiting.
DRIVING
Take it slow. The village-wide speed limit is 20 mph. Never pass anyone or anything on the right. Those who do earn themselves a nifty $250 fine. An Off-Road Vehicle permit is required to drive on the beach. You can purchase an ORV permit at recreation.gov or 1-877-444-6777.
PARKING
Parking in the village can be limited, but there are several convenient spots to leave your car or golf cart while you explore. You’ll find spaces near the Ocracoke Lighthouse and at the NPS docks. From these locations, you can easily walk, bike, or in the summer, hop on the free village tram to reach shops, restaurants, and waterfront views. If the main village areas are full, these are great alternatives.
DISPOSING
Please use the trash receptacles provided throughout the island—you’ll find them at all tram stops and around the village. Don’t toss trash from your car or golf cart, and be sure to separate recyclables so they can be taken to the dump. A little care goes a long way in keeping Ocracoke beautiful for everyone.
TRAM RIDING
The free tram runs May through September, with stops marked by signs and benches around the village. You can view the full tram map here. If the main village areas are full, these are great alternatives.
FIREWORKS
No fireworks on our island. No exceptions.
